Check it out... these are the articles that were featured this week by known Philaphile Johnny Goodtimes over at Philly Sports History. If you don't know who Johnny is, you'd better brush up on your goddamn Philadelphianism. Philly is chock-full of sports fans and history buffs... when the two combine, watch the fuck out. Johnny is able to fill a certain need that I can't, mainly because I don't know jack shit about sports. Here's the good shit he's writing about:
- The first American to ever win the US Open was from Philly, and he was a trash-talking braggart who backed it up. Unfortunately, he lost his sanity and spent the majority of his life in the Norristown Hospital for the Insane.
- Because of Philly's idiotic blue laws, the Phillies couldn't serve beer in the ballpark until 1961. Of course, that didn't mean that Philly fans didn't get drunk. It just meant they smuggled gallons of hootch into the park themselves. Here's a brief history of booze and baseball in Philadelphia.
- Did you know that the movie The Natural was based on a former Phillies player who was shot by a crazed fan?
- Here's a fun fact you may not know: The band Yo La Tengo takes its name from something that happened to beloved Phillie Whitey Ashburn
